Happy Diwali From BCJ PREMIER LEAGUE ASSOCIATION, 2025

The Grandeur and Mythology of Diwali, the Festival of Lights

Diwali, also known as Deepawali, is arguably the most significant and celebrated festival in India, and its radiant joy extends across the globe, especially among the Indian diaspora and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs). Far from being just a single day, it is a five-day-long celebration that symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.

The Core Mythological Narrative

The most prominent and widely cherished story associated with Diwali centers on the great epic, the Ramayana.

 * Lord Rama's Return: The main event celebrated on the darkest night of the Hindu month of Kartika is the joyous return of Lord Shree Rama (along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana) to his kingdom of Ayodhya. This return marked the completion of his 14-year exile and his triumphant victory over the demon king Ravana of Lanka, who had abducted Sita.

 * The Lighting of Lamps: To welcome their beloved king and queen home and to illuminate the way on that moonless night, the citizens of Ayodhya lit countless earthen lamps (diyas). This act is the origin of the festival's characteristic brilliance and its popular name, the "Festival of Lights."

Other Significant Virtues and Traditions

While Lord Rama's return is the central theme, Diwali's grand celebration also incorporates several other virtues and mythological events:

 * Worship of Lakshmi: The festival is also fundamentally dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth, prosperity, and fortune. It is widely believed that she visits the cleanest and most brightly lit homes on the main night of Diwali, bestowing her blessings.

 * The Start of the New Year: For many business communities, especially in North and West India, Diwali marks the start of the financial new year. Business people begin new account books and offer prayers for a successful year ahead.

 * The Spirit of Unity: Diwali is a time for family and community. People clean and decorate their homes, exchange sweets (mithai) and gifts, wear new clothes, and participate in fireworks displays, fostering a spirit of togetherness and renewal.

Global Celebration and Connection

The virtuality and reach of Diwali are truly global. Indian expatriates and communities around the world—from the US and UK to Canada, Singapore, and Fiji—celebrate with the same enthusiasm as in India. Lighting the diyas, attending cultural events, and holding community pujas (worship ceremonies) allow the NRI community to maintain a vital connection to their cultural roots and share the richness of the festival with their new homelands.
